Have you got problems in getting off to sleep? Perhaps you wake at various times in the night and then have difficulty in dropping off again? Do you wake too early, or simply not feel refreshed in the morning? If there are no other factors affecting your sleep (such as young children or other health issues), these could be signs of insomnia.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by the above symptoms. People with insomnia often suffer during the day from lack of sleep. This can then induce fatigue, sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, and irritability, all due to a reduced quality of night time sleep. A refreshing sleep is important and is characterized by the quality of sleep rather than the number of hours a person sleeps. The optimal number of hours of sleep a person needs each night varies from one person to the next. But interrupted, poor quality sleep can make a person tired and irritable, regardless of the total hours.

How many types of insomnia are there? Essentially, insomnia is a symptom of other issues. Other factors, such as stress, may cause insomnia, as can physical problems. People of all ages can suffer from insomnia, from young children to adults of all ages. Identifying the root cause is essential for developing effective treatment options. Remedies for insomnia can range from making environmental changes in one's daily life or sleeping area, to the use of prescribed medications. When medications are prescribed, it is usually for a short period of time.

A doctor or psychologist can determine if you have insomnia. The healing process will depend on each individual case. However, there are things you can do on your own to help ensure a better night's rest.

** Keep to a regular bedtime and awakening time throughout the week. Often people change their sleep arrangements on the weekends, but this can make a sleep problem worse.

** Use your bed only for sleep and sexual closeness. Avoid reading or eating in bed, watching TV, or engaging in other activities. This will help train your body to sleep when you go to bed.

** steer clear of stimulants such as caffeine for four to six hours before going to bed. Exercise can also act as a stimulant, so avoid exercising within four hours before retiring.

** Have a light snack before it's time for bed, but nothing heavy.

** Try to change arrange your life so that external stress making factors are kept in check. If you are concerned about something, or under a great deal of stress, sleep may be difficult.

These are only a few suggestions. Sleep specialists are able to work with you to determine specific causes of sleep disturbance. If there is concern of a physical problem, undergoing a sleep study can determine if you have apnoea or other sleeping issues. Consult your regular physician or make an appointment with an ear, nose, and throat doctor, or visit a sleep specialist. Sleep deprivation caused by insomnia can be problematic in your daily life. Determining the cause of sleep disorders and taking necessary actions to correct the problems can make a sizeable impact on your life.

It’s a surprising fact that in the USA some 5-7 million, yes, million, children over the age of six years still suffer from bedwetting at night. This is where fluids that have passed through the kidneys and been converted into what we know as urine, ends up in the bladder. All too often the full bladder does not pass the electrical stimulus to the brain telling the body that an evacuation of the bladder is imminent and that the child should wake up, hence the unfortunate incident of bedwetting.

One reason that the bladder overflows is that fluids, particularly sugary drinks, most particularly those containing caffeine, when taken late in the evening, can cause this problem. As explained in another article on this site, it takes time for the kidneys to process fluids through the system thus causing the bladder to overfill during the night.

Normally by the age of five or so the connection between bladder and brain is reasonably well established and the child can usually wake up in sufficient time to go to the bathroom. However, in the instance of the several millions we mentioned who are many years older and still suffer from enuresis; this lack of stimulus can be a problem and perhaps expert medical help should be sought.

Many parents have various reasons as to why their child wets the bed and here are just a few.

It is normal for a child to wet the bed under the age of five.

There is something wrong with my three or four year old.

It is my child’s fault that he or she still has bedwetting problems.

It must be my fault that my child wets the bed.

My child must be ill to wet the bed so much.

My child's seeking attention.

It must run in the family, it's hereditary.

Let’s deal with these myths now, as really they are mostly misguided.

It is not normal for most children under five to have bedwetting problems. Yes, some have but so many have grown out of it long before their fifth birthday.

At the age of three it is unlikely that some form of illness causes them to wet the bed. It is, of course possible and in such circumstances reassurance from a doctor might be advisable.

Very few children would deliberately continue bedwetting on purpose just to punish their parents for some reason. For one thing it would be uncomfortable for the child to be wet and also, even at a young age, peer pressure from other siblings or friends may well cause them embarrassment.

Blaming oneself if your family relationships are normal can be self defeating. If a parent is loving and understanding towards their child then it is rarely their fault. On the other hand, if the child is continually blamed for bedwetting and punished because of it, then that can be an unjust situation and may well perpetuate the problem.

Illness in a child can be one reason for bedwetting and if this is the case then apart from the obvious of seeking medical help, then even more love and consideration is required to reassure a child that it is not their fault this is happening.

Attention seeking in a child is not a reason, children will most certainly be embarrassed because of bed wetting and would stop if at all possible.

It may well be a hereditary issue and there may well be close relatives down the family line who struggled with bedwetting. In the German medical journal "Nature Genetics" during 1995, Danish researchers Hans Eiberg, Ida Berendt & Jan Mohr claimed they had found some evidence that lead to two genes that may be the cause of bedwetting in childhood. Researchers had managed to identify two genes in particular ~ ENUR1 and ENUR2 ~ that were classified as appearing on the chromosomes of children who wet the bed. It is believed that these genes may well effect how much urine is produced through the night and / or whether the child wakes up easily enough when their bladders are full and require emptying.

It is said that time is a great healer and in this situation that can be true. Most children, as they develop, will gradually grow through the bedwetting stage on their own. It could be a mistake to try to push this too hard. Encouragement and some recognition every time the child has a dry night will usually help to improve the situation and may well cause a cessation of bedwetting altogether, more quickly.

Now I knew that John and Joan were not expecting another baby but I was a little surprised to see several nappies hanging on their washing line. I needn’t have worried. It turned out that their five year old son Jack was still in the process of bedwetting. That was embarrassing for him as he was just old enough to be aware of it and bewildering for his parents as to why he should still be doing it.

Apparently boys wet the bed more than girls and as my wife and I had three children, two boys and a girl, our own experience seems to confirm this. We were fortunate in that all three stopped bed wetting quite early in their young lives. Some parents are not so fortunate but may take comfort in the fact that many children begin to have many dry nights soon after the age of five or so. On the other hand the condition can, in a few cases continue until much later in life, but it is more unusual.

In simple terms bed wetting can be Nocturnal (only during the night) or Diurnal (day and night). There is primary enuresis (bedwetting) where the condition happens from birth and secondary enuresis that can start when the child is a little older.

In Jack’s case his secondary bedwetting could be due to diabetes, a urine infection or some other medical condition that may not be readily apparent. If your child shows behavioural problems like hypersomnia, hyperkinesis, temper tantrums, food fads, nightmares, over eating, lying, stealing, nail biting, thumb sucking or stammering, you must be patient with them and find out what is bothering him/her. Obviously parents will have had this checked out by a doctor. However, normally most cases will become less frequent and stop altogether in time, which is not much comfort to parents in the short term having to contend with the wet bedding most mornings.

So, how do you stop bedwetting or at least reduce the occurrence?

Well, drink more water for a start.

“Drink more to stop bed wetting, you must be joking”?

No, it’s not a joke at all.

Children seldom drink enough PLAIN WATER, they are too busy getting the most fun out of life that they can. When they do remember that they are thirsty and need a drink they rush in and gulp down a drink, often from a can or bottle. These are usually sugary drinks, many of them containing caffeine and whilst they may quench the child’s thirst, do little for their fluid levels as the caffeine makes them want to urinate more. That means that more is coming out than is going in, therefore depleting the body of the fluid it needs.

So, it is a vicious circle. Drink more sugar and caffeine and then excrete more. Then repeat ad infinitum depleting the body of its fluid requirements. The worst time for this to happen is early evening after a day’s strenuous play. Children demand more and more fluids, usually of the wrong sort, as their bodies are calling for more to keep them hydrated. Therefore the kidneys extract the fluids as urine and pass them into the bladder. But, this can take a few hours so the bladder is still filling up after they have gone to bed and when it’s full – it has to go somewhere. The result – bed wetting.

What is the answer, or at least in part? Get your child to drink plenty of (preferably) plain water all through the day and this gives the body time to regulate the fluid levels. Cut down on the amount they drink later and, providing they drink well during the day their need to drink in the evening should be less.

Now that’s all very well, but have you ever tried to get a child to drink (especially boring old water) when they really don’t want to? It has to start by changing their habits and this needs encouragement from the parent and that means the parent should change their own habits. Make water drinking a joint affair, put a bottle of water in their bag and encourage them to drink it. Give plenty of praise, but don’t overdo it. Explain why drinking water throughout the day will help ease the bedwetting situation.

The above routine did help with our three children and they all now drink water as a matter of course. However, this is only part of the answer and just one thing that could be tried to ease the problem of bedwetting. Drinking more water has many other benefits to keep children (and adults) in good health so it is a very good habit to adopt.

But this is not the complete answer to a child’s bedwetting; it’s just one part that may help. Always seek more informed assistance from a professional, particularly if the symptoms continue beyond what is considered normal.

Well, there I was having an interesting conversation with this lady over coffee, the next moment she had fallen forward on the table and I found myself talking to the top of her head! Heavens, is she dead? Have I bored her to death? Was my inane chatter that bad? Afterwards, to my relief, I found out that it was narcolepsy that caused this sudden mood of inattention from the lady, but at the time it was most disconcerting. She later told me that narcolepsy was an affliction she had been suffering from for many years and that she could fall asleep at the most inconvenient times. In fact she hasn’t seen a movie through to the end for many years!

Narcolepsy is more common than many people realise and the main symptom is sudden and excessive sleepiness during the daytime. It can happen without warning and can occur whilst watching TV, during mealtimes, attending meetings, even whilst reading a newspaper or a book. They just fall asleep without warning, often in mid sentence of a conversation, as I found out with that unintentional demonstration over coffee. It doesn’t seem to be less prevalent even after a good night’s sleep.

Someone with this problem of daytime sleepiness has it with them all through the day but it can sometimes be overcome for a while with a great deal of effort and concentration, by the person actively resisting the desire to fall asleep. However, generally that effort is too much to sustain for long and sleepiness finally overcomes them. The state of narcolepsy can last for just a few minutes or even seconds, but sometimes much longer.

In addition to giving a fright to those who are not familiar with this problem, myself over the coffee incident for instance, the sufferer from narcolepsy can often become irritated, have an impaired memory, lack concentration and motivation and in general be able to function less well. It can be a debilitating problem with, at present, no long term permanent cure, as far as one knows.

Quite vivid dreams can often be experienced by people in a narcoleptic state and these can take the form of hallucinations that can, in some instances be quite frightening. These can happen during the transition from wakefulness to sleep, and, being technical, is called hypnologic hallucinations. On the other hand, hypnopompic hallucinations occur during the transition from sleep to wakefulness. But whichever term you choose, it can, on occasions, be a most disturbing experience. It can also be a worry to some sufferers believing, often mistakenly, that this could be leading towards some form of mental illness. In such cases expert counselling might be advisable.

It would also be helpful if members of the family and friends would learn to understand the fears and frustrations of the narcoleptic. The fact that the sufferer can be irritable, unresponsive, angry, sometimes depressed and often resentful needs to be accepted, and realised that this is due to the condition itself and not what the sufferer intends. They need to be supportive and show compassion without being pitiful of the person with the condition, and endeavour to lead, and help the patient to lead, as normal a life as possible.

A rare case of narcolepsy in the animal world

It's not only us humans that can suffer with this debilitating problem, our animal friends have their troubles with narcolepsy too! Although at first sight these cases do appear to be funny you can feel the pain that they are having to endure on a day to day basis!

Are you aware that many people suffer from a condition called sleep apnoea? It is a situation whereby the muscles in the throat relax frequently during sleep and shut off the airway. Sleep apnoea induces the person to partially awaken and take in a sudden breath with a heaving sound. This can happen numerous times during the night but the sleeper is seldom aware of it and often cannot remember it happening when they wake up.

However, sleep apnoea can cause the individual to feel tired during the day, often fractious, sometimes they forget even simple matters and have difficulty in centering on the task in hand. It may also cause problems in their social activities and, more importantly, make them more prone to accidents, especially when driving a motor vehicle.

Snoring is often connected with sleep apnoea and this can be a distinct problem for other people in the same room. Obesity is also another effect that is a link to hypertension. This can then put people at a greater risk of a potential stroke and possibly coronary failure.

People who are overweight would be counselled to take action to reduce their weight. Although it may not heal the condition it may, in some circumstances, reduce it to a more acceptable level. Having said that, sleep apnoea is a troubling situation condition at any stage.

It may not be advisable to take medication to induce sleep and alcoholic drinks do not help the situation and should be avoided where possible.

Surgery to enlarge the airway to allay the problem of sleep apnoea might be the answer but it may be worth trying a system that the author actually uses now. It's a method of inducing a gentle and continuous airflow through the nose via a small pump. A mask fits over the nose linked by a flexible hose and is not an uncomfortable experience, in point of fact the author often wakes in the morning and doesn’t realise that he is still wearing it.

There is another type of sleep apnoea caused by something to do with the brain, but that is less common that the circumstance described above and is outside the scope of this article.

If you've already spent a couple of weeks suffering through sleepless nights, getting some over the counter sleeping pills may seem like the answer to your sleeping problems, but ultimately they won't satisfactorily resolve your insomnia and may even create more problems than they help. Here are just a few reasons why you should consider other alternatives to over the counter sleeping pills to treat your sleep problems.

Sleeping pills are dangerous if you have certain health conditions – the sleeping pills that can be bought over the counter are basically just anti-histamines and, as such, there are a variety of other conditions for which anti-histamines are contraindicated, including glaucoma, high blood pressure, heart disease, ulcers and other stomach problems, and diabetes, among others.

Sleeping pills don't play well with other drugs – over the counter sleep aids often interact poorly with other drugs, including allergy medications, heart medications and muscle relaxants. While your pharmacist or doctor may indicate issues to be aware of for prescription sleeping aids, most people aren't aware they need to be careful of over the counter remedies. If you do decide to try over the counter sleeping pills, at least talk to your pharmacist about interactions with any other medication you may be taking.

Sleeping pills often make you drowsy during the day – the residual effects from sleeping pills, especially if you take them late at night, often mean that you spend the following day feeling drowsy and lethargic. In addition, they can affect your driving ability, making you a hazard to both yourself and others on the road, due to dulled reflexes and muzzy thinking.

Sleeping pills only mask symptoms – while over the counter sleep medication may allow you to get to sleep tonight, they don't treat the root of your insomnia and as soon as you stop taking them you are back to where you started — lying awake and staring at the ceiling. In order to cure your insomnia, you need to tackle what is causing it, whether it is simply a habit of poor sleep hygiene or anxiety that is keeping you awake every night.

In addition to the problems listed above, over the counter sleep aids just don't provide a very good quality of sleep. They can also lead to addiction over the long term and if you suffer from chronic insomnia, higher doses are often required in order for you to continue to use them to fall asleep. The best solution to resolving your sleep problem permanently is to tackle the root issues and to re-learn how to fall asleep naturally every night.

One excellent way to train your brain back into the habits of sleeping is Sleep Tracks. In addition to using brainwave audio technology to help you fall asleep in the short term, it is a complete sleep training course designed to permanently cure your insomnia.

Emma Martin spent most of her life struggling with chronic insomnia, but now she's happily used to sleeping through the night.

It doesn't matter what kind of a problem you are having, it is always a better idea if you can find a natural cure than trying to find one that is produced by a pharmaceutical pill. The reason why this is the case is because medical cures tend to attack the symptoms of the problem rather than attacking the problem itself. A good example of this is if you are suffering from insomnia. If you take a sleeping pill that is given to you by the doctor, all that it is really going to do is to put you into an unconscious state. It will not get to the root of the problem that is causing the insomnia, a problem that often has to do with the hormones in the body.

Our bodies are amazingly balanced and whenever we are firstborn, we rarely experience problems with insomnia because the balance in our body allows us to sleep good when we need it. As we get older, however, the environment around us creates problems that we are dealing with tend to throw our bodies out of balance along with making it difficult for us to sleep. Some of the things that tend to get out of balance during these years are the hormones within our body. Here are two hormones that tend to cause us to lose some sleep.

A Mood Inducing Hormone

The first of these is serotonin. Although this hormone does not necessarily help you to sleep it does have a lot to do with the mood that you are feeling. Serotonin is a hormone that is usually released whenever we exercise or do something good for our body. It helps us to feel good on the inside and does a lot to relieve the stress within us. If our insomnia is stress related, the hormone serotonin can go a long way in helping us to get a good nights sleep.

The other hormone that we may be lacking is melatonin. This is a hormone that is put out by our body that does many different things but for one, it helps to put us to sleep. Many people take natural forms of melatonin in order to overcome problems such as jetlag and insomnia. If you find that you are suffering from occasional sleeplessness, a little bit of melatonin in the form of a pill may go a long way in helping you to get the sleep that you need.

Is the productivity in your work already affected because of sleeplessness? Are your children already aloof with you because you get so easily irritated caused by lack of sleep? These are some of the signs that you have insomnia, which should be addressed immediately. If this is not resolved the soonest possible time, it would not only destroy your name in your work but could also destroy your family. The following are some insomnia relief tips, which are already proven effective by various people.

Have a soothing massage

Massage is a procedure that aids in the proper circulation of blood in the body. This procedure is also effective in allowing relaxation of tense muscles, biceps and triceps in the body. Through this, you could have a deep sleep. This is explained by the flushing away of pain metabolites, which would release tension in our muscles. Upon releasing tension, relaxation follows.

Drink a glass of warm milk

This practice of insomnia relief is well known to most of us. A glass of warm milk before going to bed would allow relaxation and will help you to catch a good nights sleep. According to some researches, warm milk would allow enough and proper flow of serotonin in our brain which has an inhibitory function in the body. This inhibition in the brain causes our body to rest thus, it facilitates sleep.

Think of positive thoughts

This is one of the relaxation techniques, which are effective. Just allow your mind to be emptied with negative thoughts like the pressures at work, family and in the society. Only allow positive thought to be processed in your mind. This would aid relaxation and will surely allow you the insomnia relief that you need so desperately.

Are you always being told that your snoring is keeping your partner awake? My wife kept telling me that and I’d often get a poke in the ribs to wake me up. I was always insisting that I didn’t snore but eventually had to concede that in fact I did. My snoring was annoying for us both as neither of us were getting a good restful night’s sleep. But that was all in the past and now we both sleep all night like a baby. I’ll explain why in a moment.

It’s usually the noise a snorer makes that is most irritating but it can be caused by sleep apnoea, which is a more worrying condition. That is what I suffered from. The sleeper suddenly stops breathing, often for several seconds which, to an onlooker seems much longer and they can tend to panic. However, with a great gasp and a sudden intake of air, the moment passes and all is well – until the next time. This can happen several times in the night.

Just imagine what this can do to your poor body. Apart from waking up even more tired than when you went to bed, sufferers can doze off during the day. Do this when you are driving and the consequences can be catastrophic. This condition can, and often does, put a severe strain on the heart and therefore it would appear to be sensible to get a medical opinion to be on the safe side.

There are various treatments available to help stop snoring but some are of little use so you would need to be selective and take advice first. The main cause of snoring is the blocking of the airways and this could be fatty deposits in and around the throat or possibly the tongue slipping to the back of the throat, amongst others. Vibrations of the soft palate membranes can also cause snoring as can the tonsils although apparently the latter tend to shrink with age.

Self help ways to ease the problem of snoring is, stop smoking, lose weight, cut back on alcohol consumption. Don’t drink alcohol late at night or have a heavy meal just before retiring. Sleep on your side rather than on your back.

Controlled Night-time Breathing Using A CPAP Machine

I think that I must have had a severe case of snoring and sleep apnoea and although I tried all of those things I still snored and gasped with sleep apnoea. This became a worry, so much so that I eventually sought medical help. This arrived in the guise of a mandibular advancement device or nasal CPAP machine, (continuous positive airway pressure) and this device pumps a controlled stream of air through a flexible hose to a mask worn over the nose. This may sound like a drastic way to prevent snoring but in my case it has, and still does, work beautifully and I now sleep well all night without a single snore to disturb us, as my happy and well rested wife can testify.
